the patterned life

A pattern may be said to consist of elements (images, sounds, behaviors, etc.,) that repeat in a predictable manner such as in a beautiful Persian or Navajo rug, a quilt, or the tile work in a mosque, or in bolts of fabric. I have always wanted to be a textile designer, so for me, drawing patterns that could be transferred to fabric, or creating patterns for quilts is the type of art work that I prefer. This type of creative work is usually labeled decorative, or lumped in with so-called ‘arts and crafts,’ which in sets it apart from art-work that does not serve a functional purpose apart from taking up space on a wall.

Patterns are a part of our lives whether we are artists or truck drivers (how about those fat tire treads!), daydreamers or entrepreneurs. In this blog I will post photos of the patterned objects, both organic and inorganic, that I see everyday as well as display some of my personal work. And, there will be more of my commentary as I go along, and, if you stumble across this blog and have comments of your own, I look forward to reading them.
